A Peek at the Week
This week we talked about holiday fun and worked on some holiday projects. Each day the children enjoyed talking at circle time about their Christmas trees (it seems everyone in class has a tree at their house). We heard about the special ornaments and lights on the trees, and how holidays are special at their houses. The children are VERY excited for the upcoming holidays. We read the book “Mortimer” during circle. Mortimer sings his own song when his mom, dad and brothers and sisters ask him to be quiet at bedtime. You may hear your child singing his tune “Clang, Clang, rattle bing bang gonna make my noise all day, clang, clang, rattle bing bang, gonna make my noise all day”.
Centers: Foam blocks and balls and ramps at the rainbow rug, train station/tracks, coloring on mural paper on the floor, “writing” letters to family/friends or Santa, holiday crafts, and painting on the easel.
Vocabulary: holidays, family, special, important, ornaments, tree, giving, sharing, kindness.
PT Group: This week the children participated in a fun, creative holiday activity. The children worked in pairs…one was a reindeer, and the other Santa. The reindeer pulled Santa on his/her sleigh (scooter) to deliver a package to the houses. Colored foam blocks were the presents, and colored hula-hoops were the houses, so they had to match the correct shape with the correct colored house. This was a great teamwork activity, and the children enjoyed pretending to be reindeer and Santa. We did take a few photos of this activity, and will try to post them on the website this week.

THANK YOU’s!: Thanks to Nate and Mrs. Schmidt for getting crickets for our frogs this week.
Looking Ahead: We will be having our class Holiday party on Thursday December 23 from 10:30-11:30. The room Moms will be contacting you with more information. This is sure to be a fun time! When we come back, January will be a month of learning about many winter topics, including projects with snowmen, snow, and animals. The end of January will be Dinosaur fun.
Does your child play with the same toys every day? With the holiday gifts approaching, now is a good time to look at your child’s play habits. Does he/she play with the same toys in the same way during play times? To help expand your child’s interest and play skills, it’s a good idea to “rotate” your child’s toys. For example, if you have a train set up for daily play, you could pack it away in a closet for a while, and put some new toys out in its place. This way your child is given opportunities to learn how to play with new, different materials. Maybe your child doesn’t typically seem interested in art activities such as painting. By providing them with an easel and the paints each day, they will begin to try new things with these materials. Something to think about…
Reminders: Class meets Weds and Thurs next week. Have a nice week

A Peek at the Week
This week we learned MORE about manners and our feelings. The children are now applying these manners to our daily routine, and commenting on actions saying, “that was nice manners” or “that’s not good manners”. At circle time we threw the koosh to each other after saying the person’s name that we wanted to throw the koosh to. We then sang “______throws it to______, ______throws it to______, hi ho the dairyo ______throws it to______.”
Centers: Computer, Kitchen, Chalkboard coloring, blocks, Happy/Sad face “masks”, Look What I Can Do, Journal writing, an emotions sorting/grouping activity, and coloring.
Vocabulary: please, thank you, sorry, you’re welcome, no thank you, excuse me, and can I have a turn?
PT Group: This week the children continued practicing with the balls. They sat on the floor and rolled the ball around their bodies. Then they rolled the balls around their waists while standing, as well as around their heads and their knees, as well as many others. Then they were paired up with a partner, and passed the ball to each other while standing back-to-back and sitting back-to-back.

A Peek at the Week
This week we learned about manners and our feelings. During circle time we talked about the way we should treat other people, and how the way people treat us makes us feel. We read various books about our manners and feelings, and practiced using good manners throughout our school day. We carried over these good manner habits into our center time, practicing good manners in all of various centers.
Centers: kitchen, puppet theater, blocks, science with magnets and paperclips inside water bottles, Look What I Can Do, Journal writing, an emotions matching game, and coloring.
Vocabulary: please, thank you, sorry, you’re welcome, no thank you, excuse me, and can I have a turn?
PT Group: This week the children practiced using balls. They sat on the floor and rolled the ball around their bodies. Then they rolled the balls around their waists while standing, as well as around their heads and their knees, as well as many others. This required good listening to the directions and holding the balls with each hand.
Speech/Language: This week we started work on a new story, Country Mouse and City Mouse.
We started by learning about a mouse. We drew a mouse practicing the names of the shapes we saw. Then we practiced squeaking. Next we learned the names of the characters from the story and practiced describing size. The children also worked on the concepts of what each eats and where they live. Everyone seemed to enjoy this activity. At the beginning of each new lesson we practice drawing the main character using shapes. The children really like drawing on the mirror. Crayola has markers that you can use to color on windows and mirrors and they clean up very easily. These would make a great holiday gift for the children.
THANK YOU’s!: Thanks to Jennifer and Mrs. Arling for sending in glue sticks for all of our art projects.
Looking Ahead: In December we will be learning about Feelings, Manners, Holidays with Families, and Food/Meals.
Reminders: Have a nice weekend!

A Peek at the Week
This week we learned about Tools and Utensils. We talked about many common tools and utensils, and what these items are used for. We also talked about how our hands can be used as tools, such as when we open our milk, and while finger painting. At the science table, the children used magnet wands to “find” the paperclips inside a bottle filled with sand, and another bottle filled with purple water. The children also walked around the room finding other objects which were magnetic, such as the legs of the chairs and tables, the filing cabinet, the art drying rack, door knobs, etc. On Friday the children will attend an assembly about dancing. Be sure to ask your child about it.
Centers: Finger painting, little tikes tool bench with legos and tools, dollhouse and furniture, coloring turkey pictures, Science table with magnets, and a Magnetic Leap Frog letter activity.
Vocabulary: hammer, nail, tool, screwdriver, drill, saw, nut, bolt, utensil, whisk, spatula, spoon, fork, knife, can opener, magnetic, metal, and magnets.
PT Group: Renee came up with a very creative obstacle course this week. The children had to obtain all of the ingredients for a Thanksgiving meal. They walked across a balance beam where they picked up one plastic vegetable, then went through a tunnel where they picked up a fruit, rolled across a mat and got a “roll” or other bread, then hopped on a trampoline, and finally walked on a path of circles where they picked up a plastic turkey or ham. The children then sorted the items back into their appropriate categories by placing them in a basket for the bread, etc.
Speech/Language: Mrs. Mishou was out sick on Wednesday and Thursday this week. Bowen-mishou@cromwellct.org
THANK YOU’s!: Thanks to Robyn Casella (AM class) for donating the leap frog alphabet letters refrigerator game, both classes have enjoyed these very much already. These are a great idea for a Holiday gift... some parents told me at conferences that you already have these letters and love them! Mrs. Polezonis (PM class) donated a homemade stop/go sign for the bathroom door. It is Velcro’d to the door, and the children change the sign to show whether the bathroom is occupied or not. What a great idea! She also donated some glue sticks, and picked up crickets for the frogs this week, so thanks again. Thanks to those parents who sent in the cards from magazines…these will be great for the children to practice cutting anytime!
Help needed: those items mentioned previously...thanks again to everyone for your help!
Looking Ahead: Next week we will be talking about Thanksgiving, and furniture/utensils. It will be a good time to discuss table manners and the items on the table during meals.
Reminders: Both AM and PM classes will meet as usual on Monday and Tuesday next week. On Wednesday, there is only AM class, NO PM Class on Wednesday November 24th. There will be no newsletter next week due to the shortened week. Enjoy your holiday!

A Peek At Our Week
Apples, pumpkins, and farms were the topics again this week. During circle we continued to work on rhyming words related to farms, such as cow-now, pig-dig, etc. We also continue to work on rapid naming of letters and numbers each day. The children do well attending to the activity and participate enthusiastically. The children cut out their sponge painted leaves from last week, and they are hanging in the classroom, very colorful and each one unique. As part of a continued focus on Science in the Pre-K, we received some new wooden blocks this week. The children have enjoyed exploring these new blocks, and creating many unique buildings. The children can make predictions about what will happen when blocks are positioned a particular way, guess why something does or doesn't work, etc. This activity is great for learning about concepts such as shorter, taller, longer, biggest, etc.
Centers: Farm animals and barn with blocks, shelf toys, kitchen, coloring, Look What I Can Do, writing in journals, and farm puzzles.
PT Group
Since last week went so well, we repeated last week's activity. The children pretended they were the wind blowing leaves off of the trees in autumn. Two or three children were designated as the trees covered with leaves (colored scarves). The "wind" came along, took one leaf, and brought it to its corresponding colored circle. This was a great color recognition/sorting activity as well as a great movement and creativity activity. See the web for pics.
Help needed:
During parent conferences many of you asked for a wish list of items we need in the classroom. We decided to try including a few items in the newsletter when we are running low. This seemed to work well for the spoons and napkins; please let us know if this method does/doesn't work for you. We Are also including one no cost item you may have at home.
Current items running low on:
- Glue sticks for art projects
- A gallon of white glue (for making goop/silly putty)
- Sticky back Velcro (Joann's sells it in a box of 15 ft for approx $25.00, but can use 40% off coupon which I can provide you with).
- You know those annoying post cards that fall out of magazines? those are great for practicing cutting and "writing". Please save these and send them in to us, or use them at home with your child to practice cutting and "writing" on the lines.
THANK YOU's!
Thank you to SO MANY of you that sent in napkins and spoons! We should be all set for the year! Your prompt response is very much appreciated! Thanks to: Ben, Jared, and Nate from the morning class, and Hannah and Colette from the afternoon class. Thank you to Nate and Mr. Schmidt for tracking down crickets on Monday night. The frogs appreciate your dedication and traveling to 3 pet shops for their dinner!
If you are planning on picking up crickets for the frogs, Guppies to Puppies has been out of them quite frequently. Cozy Coe's Pet Shop at

A BIG THANKS: Parent conferences were a GREAT success. It was wonderful having the opportunity to sit down with each and every one of you and discuss your child’s wonderful progress! I had 100% attendance at the conferences, which is extraordinary. Thanks to all of you for being such involved and supportive parents!
A new book: This week each child was sent home with a book What Readers Can Do. These books were given to the children from the Scholastic Book Club due to the great participation in ordering books for your children. Thanks for your support in the Book Clubs, and enjoy the free book at home.

With the approaching holiday season I’d like to invite you all to check out some gift ideas that will be fun and encourage student’s developing pre-writing skills. (See attached Gift Suggestions List.) One of the interesting and fun activities that Mrs. Maruschock has been using in the classroom is one you could use with your children at home. They will need a clipboard with paper or a sturdy pad with shapes (or even letters) drawn down the left side of the page (i.e. circles, squares, diamonds and triangles). Then they look around the house for things that are the same shape as the ones they have listed and put a check next to the appropriate shape for each shape they find. The students really enjoyed doing this in the classroom and are so proud of themselves whenever they recognize the shapes around them. The skills they are developing include visual discrimination, visual scanning, matching, visual figure ground discrimination and form constancy (recognizing images in a variety of positions and formats as the same images). And, as always, HAVE FUN!

A Peek at the Week
More Vocab: square, circle, rectangle, oval, star, triangle, pentagon, hexagon, and octagon, trapezoid, small, medium, and large, ramp, tunnel, cylinder, roll.
Centers: Magic painting: paint on white paper with water colors and watch as a shape magically appears on the paper (we used white crayon to draw the shapes on before the activity). Science table, balls/ramps center, practice corner, using shape sorters at the shelf toys center, and finding shapes around the classroom and checking it off on a clipboard. At Look what I can do, the children practiced cutting shapes which ranged from straight lines to circles. Some of the students started drawing in their “Science Journals”. Their first task was to draw a picture of the balls and ramps center to illustrate what they did there. The children did a great job with this for their first time, and will continue to be given opportunities to draw more in their journals.
Speech and Language: This week we worked on using shapes to draw a bear. We then talked about bears and their parts. The children enjoyed reading Goldie Locks and the Three Bears. We will use this story for the next few weeks to address speech and language skills. The /r/ sound will be worked on during this time. We were growling like bears.
PT Group (Please see back for OT news)
This week the students used scooter boards to “deliver” shapes to the correct large wooden cut out shape. Each student picked up one shape, rode down on their scooter however they wanted…some on their bellies, their knees, or their bottoms. They then matched the shape with its larger match, and went back for another shape. This was a lot of work, but everyone worked together and got it done!
New class pets!
New this week: two fire-bellied toads in an aquarium at the science center. The children enjoy watching the frogs hop and swim in the water.
THANK YOU’s!
A Big thanks to Nate and his Dad for trimming branches on the playground last week. He also volunteered to do some other projects along with Mr. Beck from the afternoon class!
Another big thanks to Mrs. Savinelli for making a GREAT apple tasting graph and donating apples, mini pumpkins, and a large pumpkin to the class. These will be put to good use next week…tasting the apples and charting our favorites and making applesauce for snack.
Reminders:
§ Sneakers & comfortable clothes every Wednesday for PT group.
§ Comfortable shoes every day for outside playtime and fire drills.
§ Parent conferences will be held Nov 1 and Nov 4. Please verify your time and let me know if you need to change your time. There will be no afternoon class on these days.
Looking Ahead
The last week of October will be about farms, apples, and fall time. We will be tasting apples, and making applesauce. We will be having a small Halloween party Friday October 29th. You will hear from the room parents with more information, as it gets nearer. If you would like to volunteer in the classroom to help with a project involving one of the upcoming topics, please let us know.

A Peek at the Week
On Thursday some of the class chose to help make applesauce. The children helped cut the apples using plastic knives and put the sugar, water, and cinnamon in the dish. We microwaved it for approximately 15 minutes (depends on how many apples you use). The children enjoyed tasting the applesauce, which was delicious! This would be a great activity to do at home: talking about amounts such as a little, more, less, and descriptive words such as pouring, stirring, and cooking. (Recipe on back)
Many of the students brought in their Halloween costumes for show and tell this week. The child showed his/her costume and told us why s/he chose that costume, as well as what s/he was planning to do on Halloween. See photos on the web.
The Halloween party on Friday included a pumpkin project, yummy snacks, and goodie bags. Nate and his Mom gave each child a ghost lollipop, and Meghan and her Mom gave each child ghost or pumpkin slinky.
Centers: Farm animals and barn, pattern block pictures, shelf toys, kitchen, coloring, Look what I can do, and sensory table with pumpkin “guts”.
Apples and pumpkins were at one end of the room, and the children had to ride their scooter boards to the other end and get a certain number of apples and pumpkins as Renee told them. It got tricky when she started asking for different numbers, such as one apple and three pumpkins. This was a great listening activity as well as movement.
New class pets!
New this week: two fire-bellied toads in an aquarium at the science center. The children enjoy watching the frogs hop and swim in the water. Anyone willing to pick up crickets for the frogs one week, please let us know.

This week we learned about how to take care of ourselves/our bodies. This included reviewing the steps to washing our hands, and why it’s so important to wash our hands. It also included “practicing” brushing teeth on paper teeth with shaving cream, and identifying self-help objects such as those listed in the vocab list (see below). Be sure to ask your child questions about this topic such as “why do we wash our hands?”
During our end of the day circle, the class played “Duck Duck Goose”. Everyone enjoyed playing this game, and really got the hang of it by Friday. A great game to play on a rainy day at home.
Vocab: germs, wash, brush, soap, toothpaste, hairbrush, toothbrush, washcloth, towel, and clean.
Centers: dolls/babies at kitchen, brushing teeth on easel with shaving cream, shelf toys with zipping/lacing/buttoning boards for practice, Look What I Can Do center with tracing, coloring, writing in journals, and an ABC floor puzzle.
Speech and Language:
This week we worked on matching similar items, counting to eight and answering how many questions. These activities are done in conjunction with the Three Little Kittens unit. We continue to work on the names of all the students in the classroom. While we are counting we work on the /th, f, and s/ sounds. When you count with your child please remind them to use these sounds correctly. Show them how your mouth makes that sound and have them imitate you. bowen-mishou@cromwellct.org

With Renee this week the children continued practicing using beanbags, and balancing them, this time using TWO bean bags. Renee would give an instruction, such as “put the bean bag on your back” and the children had to figure out how to bend their bodies, and walk from one end of the AP room to the other and then back.
Everyone enjoyed this activity while reviewing their body parts.

Hello to all of you, especially those I did not have an opportunity to meet on ‘Meet The Teacher Day’! My name is Margaret Root and I am the occupational therapist in the pre-K program. I would like to use just a little space in the newsletter from time to time to offer suggestions about activities that could be done at home to enhance the fine motor and visual motor development of your child.
For example: Now that fall has arrived it’s a great time for children to get involved in raking. It’s a great way to build strength and coordination in the upper body. Believe it or not stability, large motor coordination and endurance in the shoulders and torso lay the best foundation for writing later. It is also a good time to teach children to ENJOY being good helpers! Have a wonderful weekend!

ECS Pre-K Classroom News
This week at school was a week of getting to know each other. We started each circle time with a hello song. Each child put their picture on a board one at a time, and we sang “hello ____, hello ____, hello ____, we’re glad you came to school”. We worked on making eye contact when saying hello to someone, and responding when someone says hello to you. We also worked on telling people “My name is _____”. We will continue to do activities involving our names to get to know each other. Each child was sent home with a photocopies page of each student’s picture…this is a great visual helper to facilitate language with your child. Ask them to show the child whom he/she played with each day.
Centers this week included: Legos, shelf toys, kitchen, coloring, dot painting, and drawing pictures of ourselves.
Speech and Language:
Mrs. Mishou will be writing in this newsletter about the activities she does each week with the children. Look here for important information about speech and language news.
Did you look at the back of this newsletter???
From time to time we will be including articles from various sources that we think may be of interest to you as parents. Please watch the back of this newsletter for that info. If you come across something that you would like us to include in the newsletter, please feel free to forward to our attention. We’d love to share the information with all of the parents.

We had our first PT group with Renee on Wednesday. Thanks for remembering to send your child in sneakers on this day. The children had a fun (and sweaty) time practicing their skipping, galloping, hopping, bear walking, walking frontward and walking backwards, as well as running. Each week Renee will provide the children with many opportunities for movement and exercise. We look forward to a fun year of activities with Renee.
Looking Ahead
September will be a month of learning about each other, our families, and our bodies. We will be sending home classroom books throughout the year for your child to share with his/her family. This is a great opportunity to talk to your child about his/her experiences at school, and learn more about the classmates in your child’s class.
Do you prefer communicating by email?? If you would like to communicate with me via email, please send me your email address and I will add you to my address book. This is a quick and easy way for me to give you updates about your child’s progress, or ask a quick question.
Feel free to email me any time, I check it 2 or 3 times daily. If I don’t respond back to you in the same day, it probably means our email system is down, and you should call me instead.

ECS Pre-K Classroom News September 24, 2004
This week we talked about Families. We read “My Family, Your Family”, and “We Are All Alike, We Are All Different” this week. The children worked on books about their families, coloring each family member’s picture, telling us about that family member, and putting the pages together. These will be coming home today or early next week. Everyone completed his or her life-sized picture of himself or herself, and these will be hung up in the classroom on display.
Our class frogs arrived this week. These frogs were raised as eggs in our classroom last year, and went on summer break with a now Kindergarten student. There are three frogs, and have been appropriately named “small”, “medium”, and “large”. These frogs are fed live crickets, which the children can observe some days. We may be asking for parents to help with picking up crickets from the pet store for us. If interested, please let us know.
Many of the children brought in pictures of themselves as babies. The class had fun trying to guess who the baby was in each picture. We learned the sign language for the following words: family, mom, dad, brother, sister, grandma, and grandpa. Other vocabulary words included: aunt, uncle, and cousin. For centers this week, the dollhouse was a big hit. Other centers this week included: coloring family members, game: Candyland, shelf toys, dolls in the kitchen, and working on a book “about our class”. This book will be sent home with each child to share with his/her family.

With Renee this week the children practiced using beanbags, and balancing them. Renee would give an instruction, such as “put the bean bag on your back” and the children had to figure out how to bend their bodies, and walk from one end of the AP room to the other and then back.
Everyone enjoyed this activity while reviewing their body parts.
Thanks..
Thanks to Mrs. Arling and Mrs. Schmidt for representing Pre-K at the PTO meeting Weds night. All parents are encouraged to attend. Mrs. Arling and Mrs. Schmidt are our co-room parents, with Mrs. Savinelli and Mrs. Valentin also helping out.
Reminders:
Please send your child to school in sneakers every Wednesday for PT group. Also, we’ve had two “official” fire drills so far this year (not including the practice ones we did as a class). Some children have a difficult time walking quickly when wearing sandals, and a couple have fallen off. Please consider this when sending you child to school each day.
Looking Ahead
September will be a month of learning about each other, our families, and our bodies. October topics will include: colors, shapes, farms, apples, and fall time. If you would like to volunteer in the classroom to help with a project involving one of the upcoming topics, please let us know.

Morning Edition September 17, 2004
This week at school we continued to get to know each other. We started each circle time with the same hello song. We also worked on telling people “My name is _____”. We will continue to do activities involving our names to get to know each other. We also learned about body parts, and what we use different body parts for.
For our project, each student glued on body parts on a paper, then colored the person to look like them. These are hanging up on our “shining stars” bulletin board in the classroom. Also, the teachers traced each child on a large piece of paper while they were lying on the paper. The children will color these life-sized people, and then they will be hanging in the classroom. Centers included: shelf toys, kitchen, blocks, a body parts memory/matching game, body part puzzles, and coloring. We practiced having a fire drill, and may have a “real” practice Friday morning. Be sure to ask your child about it today.
Vocabulary: head, arm, leg, shoulder, hands, fingers, legs, toes, belly/stomach, eyes, ears, mouth, and nose were some of the most commonly talked about body parts this week.
Speech and Language:
For this month we will be working on the “Three Little Kittens”. With this book we are learning body parts, counting, sequencing and using descriptive words. We also practiced making all of the vowel sounds and learning the names of the students in the classroom. If papers come home with cats on them, they are from me. The easiest way to reach me with any questions is: bowen-mishou@cromwellct.org
PT Group
This week our PT group activity involved our body parts. The children used a balloon, which they bounced with their fingertips, then the palm of their hands, as well as their heads and knees. The group had a great time participating in the activity while learning about body parts. Playtime is a great time to learn/review your child’s body parts with them.

Morning and Afternoon Classes September 10, 2004

Weekly News
The first week of school went very well. Ryan, Benjamin, Angel and Daniel enjoyed singing “The Itsy Bitsy Spider” and the “ABC song” during our circle time. We also started practicing the Pledge of Allegiance and singing “Yankee Doodle”.
During center time, the children had a choice of playing in the shelf toy area, which includes toy houses and people, bristle blocks for building, and waffle blocks, among other toys. Angel and Benjamin spent quite a bit of time in this area this week. Another center choice was coloring, which Daniel and Ryan particularly enjoyed. All of the children also played at the Lego center, as well as working on making their placemats for snack time, and finishing up their balloons for the birthday bulletin board.
Reminders:
§ Please be sure to fill out all paperwork sent home and return it as soon as possible.
§ We will be starting to offer milk on September 13. Please send in your money by Friday, September 10.

ECS Pre-K Classroom News May 28, 2004
This week at school we continued talking about community helpers while also continuing our investigations of frogs and butterflies. The children discovered that the smaller pond tadpoles have now grown their front legs as well as back legs. We’re watching for the tails to disappear, and have put a floating log in the container in preparation for their need to climb out of the water. On Friday Mr. Pendl, Jake’s Dad, and also a local firefighter, came in to talk to the children about fire safety and show the students the firefighter gear. The children were all very interested and did a great job participating in the conversations. Centers this week included the sensory table as a pond with water, rocks, and plastic frogs and fish to play with. Making a coloring book about a pond was the Look What I Can Do activity this week, playing with goop, large floor puzzle of tadpoles and frogs, and pretending to be a firefighter with a pretend fire truck, hose, hats, and walkie-talkies.
VOCABULARY WORDS included chrysalis, metamorphosis, changes, first, next, last, front and back legs.
Enjoy the long weekend!
PT Group
This week the children played with kick balls. They practiced kicking to each other, “dribbling” it down a straight line, and finally learned the basics of a kickball game. One child rolled the ball; the other kicked it and ran the bases while the other child ran to get the ball. Then the children switched turns. The other “team” was in the “outfield”, and caught the ball after it was kicked. They did great following directions and really enjoyed this game.

ECS Pre-K Classroom News May 14, 2004
This week at school we talked about insects/bugs. The children enjoyed telling lots of stories about encounters with bugs. We read many books about bugs during independent reading, and enjoyed many centers involving bugs. These included: the sensory table filled with finger puppet insects, rocks, grass, etc., the computer game “how many bugs in a box?”, the table game Cooties, an electronic game book called Buzz and Flutters, listened to books on tape, dot painted pictures of insects, and on Friday we’ll finish the week by making our own bug creatures to take home.
Speech and Language
This week we worked on Bear pouring and drinking juice. While doing this we practiced sequencing 3 events. We used the words first, second and third (last). The children continued to review one another’s names. We added doing words to our practice this week. Everyone worked hard!

I would like to take this opportunity to say a BIG thanks to Mrs. Camosci and Mrs. Dumas for all of their hard work in the classroom. As paraprofessionals, they sometimes get overlooked in the big picture. I know for certain that this Pre-K program would not be the success it is without their dedication! They go above and beyond every day, staying late, doing errands on their own time, and keeping my head on straight. Thanks a bunch Mrs. Dumas and Mrs. Camosci from Mrs. Maruschock!
Thanks..
Thanks to Mrs. Hall-Babbitt for reading the Welcome to my Garden Big Book! We look forward to upcoming readers!

** Please see bottom for speech news**
Well, the day the children had been waiting for arrived on Wednesday. The tadpoles are now in the aquarium, and the children spent the week talking about them, and learning more about the stages of their development. Be sure to ask your child about what s/he saw in the aquarium.
Also at the science center, the bean plant we grew from seed now has full-grown green beans on it, the sunflower seeds have sprouted and are about 4 inches tall, and the potato plant is over a foot tall now! Very exciting!
During the week, the children participated activities involving clothing. During our morning circle, the children rhymed with shoes, shirt, and pants. At the dress up center, the children could dress up as a postal worker, a construction worker, a doctor, a firefighter, a princess, a mother, a father, and a ballet dancer, among others. The flannel board had a boy and a girl that could be dressed in summer clothes, winter clothes or rainy day clothes. We also had this activity available on the colorform board. Matching polka dotted shirts with the correct number, and “dressing” paper dolls were other centers this week, in addition to Look What I Can Do, Blocks, Shelf Toys, and Mrs. Mishou’s speech center.
We continued learning the days of the week song with sign language. This is incorporated into our daily calendar routine to help learn the days of the week.
PT Group
This week in PT group the children visited the Music room, where they played a good old-fashioned game of musical chairs. The children enjoyed moving to the music as they listened for the music to stop. Since the focus wasn’t on who was going to win, the children had fun laughing as they tried to sit in a chair, sat with a friend, and got to watch the game. And, they worked up a sweat while playing!

This week we practiced the “Wheels on the Bus”. Singing is a great way to introduce the concept of rhythm and segmentation. It also helps with following directions. We practice this by listening for the next verse of the song. In addition we worked on the names of everyone in the class, outside words, vehicle words, and feeling words. We always look at people’s faces for clues to help us know how they are feeling. Finally we practiced keeping our teeth closed for the /s/ sound. Have a great break!

ECS Pre-K Classroom News April 08,2004
This week at school we talked about weather/April showers. They all worked on coloring leaves, gluing stems, and putting their pictures on a flower project to be hung in the hallway.
Leo our “critter” continues to visit us each day…he has been bringing numbers with him. This week he finished up with zero and nine. He’ll continue to visit us with those letters the children are the least familiar with for the remainder of the year.
Centers this week included matching and counting plastic eggs in the sensory table, rhyming picture words on umbrellas, journals, sequencing paper eggs from smallest to biggest, observing at the science center (still waiting for the frog eggs to get here), dress up/pretend play in the veterinarian/doctors office, and starting a rainbow mural which will be worked on again next week.
We started learning the days of the week song with sign language. This will incorporated into our daily calendar routine to help learn the days of the week.

Again this week the children pretended to be a slithering spring creature: a snake. One child rode on the scooter board on his/her belly, tagging the other children. Once a child was tagged, s/he would then be a snake riding on his/her belly on a scooter board. When everyone was a snake, the game started again with the last child tagged as the first snake. This took a lot of listening and following directions…the class did great!

ECS Pre-K Classroom News Morning Class April 2, 2004
This week we talked quite a bit about spring, including planting seeds and growing plants. The children planted their own sunflower seed, following a sequence of what to do first, next, and last. We will watch the seed sprout, and see the seedling, and then the plant and last the flower. As a project, the children cut out the pictures of the sequence, colored them, and glued them in order of steps 1-6. These are hanging in the classroom and will be sent home next week.
At the science center, we now have an aquarium with a snail and a few plants in it. The children observed the snail this week, and we talked about our future guests in the aquarium: frog eggs. We learned about the sequence of the frog egg, to tadpole, to a frog. The eggs will be arriving soon, and the children are looking forward to watching the tadpoles transform to frogs. The children colored a coffee filter using eyedroppers, and these will become flowers which we will add stems and leaves to, and hang outside the classroom with each child’s photo in the middle of the flower. Another center this week was sorting pumpkin, sunflower, and carrot seeds. The children guessed which cup contained more seeds, then counted them to find the actual number. Since the carrot seeds were the smallest, it looked as if there was the least amount in that container, when in fact it had the most. Other centers included: dramatic play doctor/veterinarian office, blocks, coloring on our bellies on the floor, and look what I can do. **Vocabulary words for this week are in italics.**
Speech and Language
This week “Bear” sang about the “Wheels on the Bus”. We practiced the verses: horn, lights and wipers. We continue to work on sequencing the 3 events in the “Bear” story. The children have been practicing vehicle words, learning each other’s names, feeling words and outside words. It is amazing how much they have learned. We also practiced the /s/ sound.
Thanks..A big thanks to Mrs. Miller, Darien’s grandmother, for reading “The house I’ll Build for the Wrens” and donating the book to our class. It’s a great addition to our collection!
