A Peek at the Week
This week was a quick week. We talked about the upcoming holidays, and completed projects pertaining to the holidays. A special gift was sent home in your child’s backpack yesterday or today. Please no peeking until the holiday! : ) We made goopy gunk (what we call goop) this week. The children followed a recipe using glue, food coloring, water, and borax soap as ingredients.
On Wednesday we attended an assembly: Music Stories, a cultural program. Be sure to ask your child about it. On Wednesday we had a small holiday celebration where we danced and did various gross motor games and activities. Thanks to the room parents for their help with the snacks.
Centers this week included: lacing holiday cards, goop and play dough centers, train center, lego and kapla blocks, kitchen, coloring on our bellies, and various other project centers.
Physical Therapy
Due to the assembly on Wednesday, we did not have PT group this week. We look forward to seeing Renee in the New Year!
Physical Therapy, or PT Group, with Renee is on
Wednesdays. Please wear sneakers and no dresses!
Important
Reminders:
~ IMPORTANT REMINDER: PLEASE label EVERY item your child brings to school with his/her name…hats and mittens especially. We’ve recently had a few hats go missing.
~Gloves vs. mittens: we appreciate you sending your child to school wearing mittens, not gloves. We are teaching independence in Pre-K, and mittens are much easier for the children to put on independently. Thank you for your help with this!
~ Thanks for sending in shoes when your child wears boots to school.
Extra! Extra!
Looking ahead: In January we will be learning about Winter, Action words, and Dinosaurs.
Does anyone have an old animal see ‘n say they could donate to the classroom? This would be beneficial for some of the children learning the sounds the animals make.
In January we will begin Scholastic’s Classroomscare Reading is Giving. We will be sending home slips of paper for you to fill out when you read books at home. After we read 100 books, Scholastic will donate books to needy children. Happy reading everyone!
We want to wish everyone a safe, fun, happy holiday season! We’ll see you all back on Tuesday January 3rd! Happy Holidays!

A Peek at the Week
This week we continued talking about positional words and also began learning about manners. We continued working on our holiday projects, along with a train positional place word project.
Each day we continue to work on learning the names of colors, and we have begun learning the names in Spanish as well. We also work on letter and number recognition through the “rapid naming” exercises. We continued to have visits from Ruby the duck (a sticker picture). She likes alphabet letters, so each day she will be stuck on a different alphabet letter when we do our rapid naming.
Centers this week included: a holiday project, train project, play dough, coloring, train center, and kitchen center.
Vocabulary this week focused on the following words: please, thank you, excuse me, you’re welcome, etc as well as in, out, on, under, beside/next to, under, on top, over, near, far, in front, behind, and up/down.
Physical Therapy
In PT group the children played with large shapes this week. The children went in and out of the shapes, moving their bodies in different ways. First they crawled through, and then they crawled backwards, then walked through without letting their hands touch the floor, etc. Everyone did great with this!

~ Thanks for sending in shoes when your child wears boots to school.
~ OUTSIDE playtime: We will not be going outside each day while the snow is on the ground. We will send home a note asking you to send in snow gear if we will be going outside the next day.
Extra! Extra!
Looking ahead: The rest of December we will be talking about food/meals, holidays, and manners/feelings.
We will be having a small holiday “party” on Wednesday December 21. Our room parent will be making a simple treat, and we will be doing a special project after attending a holiday assembly.
The week of December 19 will be a “typical” week for the AM class…we will be in session Tues, Weds, Thurs that week.
Does anyone have an old animal see ‘n say they could donate to the classroom? This would be beneficial for some of the children learning the sounds the animals make.

A Peek at the Week
This week at school we learned about positional/place words. We did many activities involving these words; including putting stuffed bears around the classroom using the positional words. For example, we looked at a picture showing on top, and then put the bear on top of the bookshelf in the classroom. The students had fun finding silly places to put the bears using these place words.
Each day we continue to work on learning the names of colors, and we have begun learning the names in Spanish as well. We also work on letter and number recognition through the “rapid naming” exercises. We also met Ruby the duck (a sticker picture). She likes alphabet letters, so each day she will be stuck on a different alphabet letter when we do our rapid naming.
Centers this week included: a holiday project, a colored glue project, train center where we put the trains through the tunnel, over the bridge, under the bridge, etc. Coloring pictures of positional words was another center. Blocks with cars and trucks, journals and cutting centers were open this week as well.
Vocabulary this week focused on the following words: in, out, on, under, beside/next to, under, on top, over, near, far, in front, behind, and up/down.
Physical Therapy
In PT group the children played with “hula hoops”. They practiced using place words by standing inside the hoop, outside the hoop, etc. Everyone listened very well while practicing these words. Nice work!

A Peek at the Week
This week at school we continued talking about furniture and utensils. We did a project where the children colored pictures of furniture including a bed, refrigerator, sink, etc. They then cut out these pictures and glued the pictures into the correct room of the house. These are on display on the classroom bulletin board. Utensils were put in the sensory table along with cornmeal, which the children scooped and poured. We began changing our seasonal bulletin board in the hallway by taking down the pumpkins and adding winter animals to the scene. These included birds and bears, and brown leaves were added as well.
Each day we continue to work on learning the names of colors, and we have begun learning the names in Spanish as well. We also work on letter and number recognition through the “rapid naming” exercises.
Centers this week included: a project coloring and gluing furniture into the proper rooms of the house, listening center with the story “Peanut butter and Jelly”, kitchen where the vocabulary words were emphasized, large floor puzzles: a train puzzle and Hey Diddle Diddle puzzle. Journals and cutting centers were open this week as well.
Vocabulary this week focused on the following words: couch, chair, table, desk, bed, dresser/bureau, refrigerator, oven/stove, and bookshelf.
Physical Therapy
This week the children played with foam balls and practiced with a partner. They rolled the ball between their legs and around their bodies. They worked on throwing and catching the ball as well.

A Peek at the Week
This week we talked about Halloween/pumpkins as well as farms. During circle we played a game called “Pass the Pumpkin”. A pretend pumpkin was passed around the circle as we sang the following song: “Pass the pumpkin, pass the pumpkin, pass the pumpkin round to me. When it stops, I’ll take out something that begins with letter /P/” (to the tune of Clementine). The child then opened the pumpkin, took out a picture of an object that begins with the letter /P/, and we all practiced saying that word.
On Tuesday the students went to an assembly about Rain Forests. An informational notice was sent home about this on Wednesday.
Centers this week included: shelf toys, waffle blocks with barns and farm animals, coloring, a pumpkin matching activity, journals, cutting, and magnetic pictures of animals on magnetic boards.
Vocabulary this week focused on the following words: pumpkin, pie, piano, pig, pencil, pillow, pear, pizza, pin, Jack-O-Lantern, farm, and common farm animals.
Physical Therapy
This week the children played an apples and pumpkins game with Renee using scooter boards. The children were told how many of each object they needed to get, then rode their scooters to the other end to retrieve that number of objects. This fun activity incorporated listening skills and counting skills into the physical activity. Using listening and counting skills is a great idea at home or the playground too!

A Peek at the Week
This week we continued to learn about Fall through our circle time lessons and center activities. We made paper plate spider puppets this week which we sponge painted black, then added eyes, legs, and a handle. We used them to sing “The Itsy Bitsy Spider” and “The Great Big Spider” during circle. At the science table, we observed and compared different fall items, such as pumpkins, gourds, leaves, apples, and acorns. At the coloring center, we colored pictures of pumpkins and Jack-O-Lanterns. Other centers included: legos, journals, a pumpkin emotions matching/memory game, kitchen, Listening center listening to “5 Scary Monsters”.
Vocabulary this week focused on the following words: Fall, autumn, leaves, pumpkin, apple, acorn, and different signs of fall such as cold weather, wearing jackets, raking leaves.
Physical Therapy
We played a fun game with pretend leaves this week with Renee. One student was the “tree” with leaves (colored scarves) all over them. The other children were the wind and “blew” the leaves off of the tree. This was lots of fun.
Physical Therapy, or PT Group, with Renee is on
Wednesdays. Please wear sneakers and no dresses!

A note from Mrs. Maruschock: It’s nice to be back. I spent the week getting to know the children and sharing pictures of “baby Jake”. Miss Hughes will be missed, so on Wednesday we took a walk to visit her in the classroom she is currently helping out in.
The class book is coming around! Each family will get a turn to take the class book home and look at it. Please make comments on the pages provided. The children love to share what their families have to say.
Since Halloween is on Monday, the children will not be wearing Halloween costumes to school.
Class website update: As of this time the website has not been updated, and it is unclear if/when it will be “up and running”. We will keep you posted.

Our class discussed the different signs of Fall; like weather changes, autumn foods, and activities that we can do during this season. Our centers helped us learn more about Fall. We painted apple trees using our hands and made paper plate pumpkins for our hallway bulletin board in the project center. We played two math games called Pumpkin Patch Math and Apple Orchard Math; we were able to pick the pumpkins and apples from the pumpkin patch and the apple tree. We had a chance to taste three different colored apples, red, yellow, and green, and choose our favorite one. They were very delicious! At the science table, we observed and compared different fall items, such as pumpkins, gourds, leaves, apples, and acorns. We spent time sorting leaves by color, type, and size. At the coloring center, we had a chance to imprint leaves by rubbing crayons over paper. The play dough center was lots of fun. We were able to play with orange play dough and could make fall shapes with it using cookie cutters. We learned a lot about Fall this week!
Vocabulary this week focused on the following words: Fall, Autumn, leaves, pumpkin, apple, acorn, and different signs of fall such as cold weather, wearing jackets, raking leaves.
Physical Therapy
Renee had us using different parts of our bodies in PT Group this week. We had to practice balancing a bean bag on the parts of our bodies. We used our heads, backs, hands, feet, elbows, and even shoulders. After balancing one bean bag, we had to try to balance two!
Physical Therapy, or PT Group, with Renee is on
Wednesdays. Please wear sneakers and no dresses!
Important
Reminders:
~Wear comfortable shoes every day for outside play time and for fire drills.
~ Check folders every day for important papers and information!
~ We need volunteers to purchase crickets for our frogs once a week.
Please let us know if you would like to “donate” any crickets.
~ Remember that you can contact me via email at knagy@cromwellct.org.
Extra! Extra!
Our last day with Miss Hughes is Thursday, October 20th.
Mrs. Maruschock will be back in our classroom Monday, October 24th. J
The class book is coming around! Each family will get a turn to take the class book home and look at it. Please make comments on the pages provided. The children love to share what their families have to say.
In music last week, we sang songs about caring for our bodies with Mrs. Chapman. We sang songs about washing our hands and keeping our bodies healthy. We even made “soap suds” sounds using musical shakers!
Children will not be wearing Halloween costumes to school. If your child would like to share his or her costume please bring it in next week.
We will have a show and share time set aside for Halloween
costumes. Thank you!

A Peek at the Week
This week we learned about the parts of our bodies. We spent time learning the names of the parts
of our bodies, and what those parts do for us. Our centers helped us learn more about the parts of
our bodies. We learned and played in the following centers: caring for dolls, listening to books on
tape, experimenting with the Touchy Feely Box, tracing our bodies, gluing the parts of the body together, playing Octopus Dominoes, and putting Mr. Potato Head’s body together. In the dolls center, we were able to help babies eat, get dressed, and play together. We listened to the books, My Body and The Kissing Hand, on tape, while looking at the books. We were able to feel and describe the many different objects in the Touchy Feely Box, without being able to look at the object! Tracing our bodies was lots of fun, and after tracing our bodies we had to draw our faces with all the right parts. We worked very hard coloring, cutting, and gluing together the parts of the body in the project center. Octopus Dominoes was a fun game to play. We had to match the right colors and numbers together to create the eight arms of the octopus. The center with Mr. Potato Head allowed us to put together a potato head body with whatever body parts we wanted to choose. We also read books about our bodies this week in school. My Five Senses, My Body, and My Body Belongs to Me are a few of those books. The Hokey Pokey and Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes are some of the songs we danced to this week. We also played the game Ms. Hughes Says using our bodies!
Vocabulary was focused on learning the parts of the body. Students worked on learning the following body parts: head, arms, legs, hands, feet, stomach, knees, elbows, fingers, toes, nose, eyes, mouth, and ears.
Physical Therapy
Renee had us using different parts of our bodies in PT Group this week. She gave us each a balloon to bounce in the air. We used our fingers, thumbs, palms, shoulders, heads, knees, and even elbows to bounce our balloons in the air. We found that certain parts of our bodies were harder to bounce a balloon in the air with than others. Ask me which body parts were easy or hard to use!
Important Reminders:
§ Wear comfortable shoes every day for outside playtime and fire drills.
§ Check folders every day for important papers and information!
§ We need a change of clothes at school for every child. Please send a change of clothes in as soon as possible.
§ We need volunteers to purchase crickets for our pet frogs each week. Please let us know if you would like to donate crickets.
§ Remember that you can contact me via email at knagy@cromwellct.org. I will check my email daily.
Looking Ahead…
Next week we will continue to learn about body parts and
begin to learn about self-care.

Morning and Afternoon Edition June 17, 2005
Last one for this school year :o(
A Peek at the Week: This week was hot to start off with and cool by the end. It was certainly a different week without Mrs. Maruschock. Children kept busy with all their favorite centers along with a center for Get Well cards for Mrs. Maruschock. We are grateful to “Mrs. M” for filling in and spending time with us. The children brought home their Father’s Day project so we hope they were found in the backpacks for Sunday.
PT Group: The AM class had group in our classroom playing the fun game of Duck Duck Goose. The PM class had group outside on the playscape this week which they really enjoyed!
Looking Ahead: We will be sending home a bag filled with some leftover items for the children including some school work for the summer. Additional summer suggestions: rapid naming letters, shape/color flash cards and name tracing for proper letter formation.
We will be having a treat on the last day of school. The room parents have already made the arrangements, so there is nothing more that needs to be done. Speaking of room parents… a very big THANK YOU for making our school year extra special. And also thanks to the Savinelli Family for taking care of our frogs this summer!

We will be having a treat on the last day of school. The room parents have already made the arrangements, so there is nothing more that needs to be done at this time. Thanks to those of you who have been offering to help…we are all set.
Reminders:
Next week both sessions meet as normal…then…
The morning class will be meeting on June 20, 21, and 22nd.
Wednesday June 22nd is the last day of school for AM session.
The afternoon class will be meeting on June 20 and 21.
Tuesday June 21st is the last day of school for PM session.
A VERY HELPFUL reminder/request: Thanks for your help with the no cupcake rule!
Playground news: Now that the weather is nice, we will be going outside most days. Please send your child in “playground friendly” clothes that can get dirty. Also, sneakers are the best shoe choice to prevent accidents, no open toed shoes please.
Writing names: Is your child practicing writing his/her name at home? If so, remember to remind him/her to use upper case letters for the first letter, then lower case for the rest of the name. Be sure they are forming the letters according to the recommended way. This will make things easier as they enter Kindergarten.
Birthday news: We want to wish Jennifer a very Happy Birthday!
Have a nice weekend!

Morning and Afternoon Edition June 3, 2005
A Peek at the Week: This week became a mix of topics…we continued some transportation fun, combined with some of our favorite activities. Over the weekend the butterflies came out of their chrysalis, so we observed the butterflies this week. We plan on releasing the Painted Lady Butterflies today.
Field day was LOTS of fun…the children really enjoyed the variety of activities. We had a beanbag toss into large shapes, sidewalk chalk, bubbles, nerf baseball and tennis, a mouse/cat beanbag toss, along with playground activities. We had a picnic snack outside, which was a lot of fun!
Centers this week included: Some of our favorite centers included: painting on the easel, water color painting, Mr. Potato Head building, a road made from tape on the rug for the vehicles, Look What I Can Do, and kitchen center.
PT Group: The children practiced with balls and plastic tennis rackets this week in PT group. Everyone worked hard and had fun with this.
Looking Ahead: In June we’ll be learning about ordering words, Father’s Day, and summer fun.

Morning and Afternoon Edition May 20, 2005
A Peek at the Week: This week we talked about Community Helpers and Transportation.
Vocabulary words included: transportation, car, taxi, airplane, train, bicycle, bus, firefighter, police officer, teacher, doctor, and mail carrier. We watched as the caterpillars transformed into their chrysalis and moved them into a bigger “home” in preparation for changing into butterflies.
Centers this week included: Dressing up as community helpers, large community helper/transportation floor puzzles, ladybug counting books, chalkboard drawing/writing, legos, and Look What I Can Do practicing tracing names.
PT Group: Renee incorporated the transportation theme by using scooter boards and playing the game “red light, green light”. The children had to pay attention to the sign, and moving their scooters when the light was green, stopping when it was red. The children also paired up, and one child pushed another child on the scooter while following the signs. Then the children switched and the other child pushed their partner on the scooter. The children really enjoyed having to “steer” their buddies on the scooter.
Looking Ahead: In May our topics will include: Insects, Nature, and numbers, Community Helpers, and Transportation. In June we’ll be learning about ordering words, Father’s Day, and summer fun.
Kindergarten Visitation: The visits occurred on May 19th and 20th and all went very well.
Everyone seemed to enjoy the bus ride and snack.
Reminders: There is a single session day on the May 26th, so no afternoon class on that day. On Friday, May 27th there is no school for am or pm due to the teacher in-service day, and no school Monday May 30 for the Memorial Day holiday.
CORRECTION: Tuesday June 21st is the last day of school for PM session.
Wednesday June 22nd is the last day of school for AM session.
A VERY HELPFUL reminder/request: We have a “no cupcake” policy in preschool. If your child will be celebrating his/her birthday in the remaining weeks of school, please do not send in cupcakes. Rice crispy treats, cookies, or animal crackers make a nice alternative. Thank you for your help with this.

Morning Edition April 15, 2005
A Peek at the Week: This week we continued talking about spring including signs of spring, spring animals, and spring activities. We started a curriculum unit called “Backyard Adventure”. This included learning a poem called “Five Little Squirrels” and reading the big book “Backyard Adventure”. Our playground was cleaned up by the Kids Corner students as well as Xavier volunteers, so we are now able to go out on the playground during nice weather. The students really enjoyed that this week. Please be sure to dress your child for outdoor play each day.
Vocabulary words included: worm, bug, moon, spring, flower, seedling, bud, grow, squirrel, crocus, and daffodil.
Centers this week included: butterfly painting project, science looking at baby snails, shelf toys, Look What I Can Do, small wooden blocks at the block center, coloring spring pictures, and kitchen that was set up as a picnic.
PT Group: This week in PT group the children went out on the preschool playground and performed a “relay race” with wooden blocks. They each had to run with one block down to the other end, place the block on the ground by the cone, and run back for the next person in line to have a turn. It was great getting outside on our playground!
Looking Ahead: In April we will spend the month discussing Spring/Nature/Planting/Weather.
Kindergarten Visitation: The Kindergarten visit has been scheduled for May 19th and May 20th. If you have not already done so, you need to set up an appointment for your child to attend one of these dates. Please call the main office to do this.
TV TURN OFF WEEK: Happening the week of April 25-May 1 (not during April vacation like last year). …We will be giving the children incentive charts to fill out during that week showing that they did not watch TV. We will also be sending home suggestions of alternative activities to keep your children busy during the week. Last year we had great success with this activity, and are looking forward to your participation again this year!
Have a nice weekend and April vacation!

Morning Edition April 8, 2005
A Peek at the Week: This week we started talking about spring including signs of spring, spring animals, and spring activities.
Vocabulary words included: spring, flower, seedling, bud, grow, squirrel, crocus, and daffodil.
Centers this week included: shelf toys, large floor puzzles, sensory table with sand and water (now the MUD table), sequencing pictures of spring events in order, Look What I Can Do, coloring spring pictures, and kitchen.
PT Group: This week the children played a spring game: Snake in the grass. During this game, one child starts riding a scooter board on their belly. They try to tag the other children running in the surrounding area, and once another child is tagged, they also become a snake and get on a scooter board as well. This continues until all of the children have become snakes, and a new game is started with a different child starting as the first snake.
Thanks: to Mrs. Arling for the napkins, as well as Mrs. Sabb. We appreciate it.
Looking Ahead: Next week we will be starting a curriculum unit called “Backyard Adventure”. This will include learning a poem called “Five Little Squirrels” and reading the big book “Backyard Adventure”. In April we will spend the month discussing Spring/Nature/Planting/Weather.
Kindergarten Screenings and Registration: All children going on to Kindergarten next year were screened during these past two weeks, and the results will be shared with you via a note or PPT meeting. The Kindergarten visit has been scheduled for May 19th and May 20th. If you have not already done so, you need to set up an appointment for your child to attend one of these dates. Please call the main office to do this.

Morning and Afternoon Edition April 1, 2005
A Peek at the Week: This week we learned about tools and machines. Some common items discussed were: rake, shovel, broom, vacuum cleaner, lawn mower, screwdriver, hammer, nail, hard hat, safety goggles, clock, saw, and ladder, among others.
Centers this week included: Shelf toys, kitchen, blocks with pretend tools, Look What I Can Do, Practice corner and Project. For our project, the children traced red and green circles, then cut them out. They glued them on a Popsicle stick and made their own “red light/green light” sign. The PM class played a game of red light/green light on Thursday. Both groups also used a tool (scissors) to “mow” their “chia grass hearts” again, which are still growing incredibly well! The practice corner time was spent with Mrs. Maruschock in Mrs. Mishou’s room, participating in the Kindergarten screening. Mrs. Maruschock will let parents know the results next week.
PT Group: Renee had the classes practicing rolling, bouncing, throwing, and catching balls. They sat on the floor and rolled the ball around their bodies. Then they practiced catching and throwing by themselves, and then catching and throwing with a partner. Everyone worked really hard and did a great job!
Thanks: In the morning class: Thanks to Ben and Mom for the chocolate Easter coins that were sent home this week.
Thanks to everyone who participated in the Read To Feed program last month. The class received a certificate of appreciation from the Read to Feed group for all of our help and support. Great job to all of you who participated; it was a great success!
Looking Ahead: In April we will spend the month discussing Spring/Nature/Planting/Weather.
Help Please: Woops, we’re running low on napkins. Can you help?
Birthday corner: There were so many birthdays this month it was hard to keep up! Happy Birthday to Stefan, Jack, Jordan, and Hannah in the PM class, and to Tyler, Meghan, Ben in the AM class.
Kindergarten Screenings and Registration will be occurring on April 4th and 5th. However, since your child is currently enrolled in the preschool, you DO NOT have to sign up for a screening appointment. The screening will be done while your child is in school on his/her regular school days. The paperwork required by the office can be sent in your child’s backpack and will be forwarded to the office. If you have already signed up for an appointment, you may call and cancel. Sorry for any confusion this has caused. Please let us know if you have any questions.
Have a nice weekend!
Don’t forget to turn your clocks ahead this weekend!

Morning and Afternoon Edition March 24, 2005
A Peek at the Week: This week we talked about the start of spring, the four seasons, and weather associated with the seasons.
Centers this week included: At the block center, the children enjoyed a center they haven’t had in a long time: the balls and ramps. It was fun incorporating this into our unit on weather/seasons, talking about how gravity makes rain, snow, and even the balls go down, not up. We ran out of time for our tool theme this week, so we will work on that next week.
Other centers: project: tracing and cutting out an umbrella, which are displayed in the classroom, Look what I Can Do Center where the children traced lines, shapes, curves, zigzags, and some traced their names, rhyming game, sensory table with water and scoops, shelf toys, and coloring.
PT Group: Last week and this week in PT group the classes played “tag”. This involved positional/place words…the children had to stay in the boxed area, and ran around until they were tagged. Once they were tagged, or ran outside the box, they sat down. Each child got a turn being the “tagger” and everyone really enjoyed this game.
Vocabulary words: gravity, down, up, in, out, next to, inside, outside, on top, on bottom, underneath, and beside.
LOTS of Thanks: In the morning class: Thanks to Mrs. Schmidt for supplying us with much needed Velcro and cups. We would also like to thank Jared, Meghan, and Jennifer for sharing the great St. Patty’s day stickers with their classmates, and to Mrs. Savinelli and Meghan for the Irish Soda Bread for snack. The children also really enjoyed the ducks and pots of gold they received from Mrs. Savinelli as well. Thank you to Robyn Cassella for the spring/Easter goodies for each child. Thanks to Jared’s Mom for the raisin snacks for the classroom…the children (and teachers) are sure to enjoy them!
In the afternoon class: Thanks to Mrs. Beck and Ms. Julia for cups as well. Thanks to Mrs. Gallo and Mrs. Polezonis for their help with the St. Patty’s day festivities. The children enjoyed the goodies.
Looking Ahead: Our last week of March will include place words and tools/machines.
In April we will spend the month discussing Spring/Nature/Planting/Weather.

Morning and Afternoon Edition March 11, 2005
A Peek at the Week: This week at school we talked about friendship, and heard a story about the Rainbow Fish. We talked about how to be a nice friend, like the Rainbow Fish learns in the story. Each student made their own rainbow fish using paint in spray bottles and bingo dot markers. These fish will be on display outside the classroom for the school-wide art show.
Centers this week included: Shelf toys, train set, sorting and sequencing, painting on the easel, coloring pictures of fish, fish and frogs in the water table, tracing our names at Look What I Can Do Center, and drawing with squiggly pens.
PT Group: This week the children continued to review many of the skills they have learned over the past months, and used their listening skills to follow directions. Everyone did a great job working on their skipping, hopping, galloping, balancing on one foot, and imitating body movements. They also worked on throwing and catching a ball.
Help Needed: We are in need of 5-ounce “Dixie” cups to refill our cup supply. Can you help?
Thanks: To Mrs. Olsen for the rainbow goldfish crackers for our Rainbow Fish week, and Clifford Teddy Graham Crackers for our Clifford week!
Looking Ahead: March we will be talking about Dr. Seuss and Clifford, Birthdays, along with Rainbow Fish and Friendship again. Other topics will include place words and tools/machines.
In April we will spend the month discussing Spring/Nature/Planting/Weather.
Scholastic Book Orders Help Children of the Tsunami: For every book the class orders from Scholastic through March 31, they will donate a book to the affected schools…up to one million books! So, if you were thinking of ordering…now is the perfect time! Everyone benefits!
Special Note: For those of you who have missed your reading days in the classroom due to the snow closings, we will be sending home a new sign up list for April and May very soon.

Morning and Afternoon Edition March 4, 2005
A Peek at the Week: This week at school topics included Birthdays, Dr. Seuss, and Friendship. The students traced their hands, and cut out the tracing with some help from the teachers. Then, a discussion about the child’s age determined how many fingers needed to be showing for their age on their “age hat”. Each child went home with one of these hats this week. Learning the Month and day of our birthdays was also part of this week.
At the Science Center, our grass hearts grew tremendously over the vacation. We measured the growth of the grass, and then used scissors to “mow” the grass. We will watch it grow and see how long it takes to get tall once again.
Centers this week included: Shelf toys, Blocks, “age hat” project, dollhouse, science, coloring birthday pictures, and cutting.
PT Group: This week the children reviewed many of the skills they have learned over the past months, and used their listening skills to follow directions. Everyone did a great job working on their skipping, hopping, galloping, balancing on one foot, and imitating body movements.
GREAT JOB: We had a great response to the tooth-brushing charts…the children were all very proud of themselves for their good work brushing their teeth. These charts are on display on the classroom’s “Shining Stars” bulletin board.
Looking Ahead: March we will be talking about Dr. Seuss and Clifford, Birthdays, along with Rainbow Fish and Friendship again. Next week will be Rainbow Fish week!
Scholastic Book Orders Help Children of the Tsunami: For every book the class orders from Scholastic through March 31, they will donate a book to the affected schools…up to one million books! So, if you were thinking of ordering…now is the perfect time! Everyone benefits!
Special Note: Today your child is going home with a McDonald’s coupon. This is in celebration of Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Enjoy!
Reminder: Have a nice weekend.

Morning Edition February 4, 2005
A Peek at the Week:
This week was more fun with DINOSAURS! The children were very excited about this topic, which got everyone talking. The vocabulary words discussed this week were amazing…including extinct, fossil, paleontologist, dinosaur tracks, and dinosaur bones, herbivore, carnivore, and omnivore. We repeated many of the various centers that involved dinosaurs. With an extra “growing” dinosaur given to us by Mrs. Savinelli, we set up a bowl at the science center. We charted its current size, and will measure it again on Friday and next week to see its growth as it expands in the bowl of water.
Some other very cool additions to our dinosaur week: Mrs. Savinelli made a poster board of an actual Triceratops’s head. This is a great way to compare actual sizes of things. Also, Mrs. M, a substitute teacher at ECS, brought in an actual Dinosaur fossil that she came across some years ago. This was on display in the classroom on Thursday and Friday, and the children really enjoyed seeing the real fossil.
Centers this week included: Shelf toys with dinosaur puzzles, a wind up dinosaur and a puzzle track for it to go on, coloring a dinosaur book, which included a page about themselves: Meghan-asaurus or Ben-asaurus for example. Another fun center was Lego’s with miniature dinosaurs where the children built museums or dinosaur lands. We added cars and trucks to this center, which was a big hit.
PT Group: None due to the puppet assembly on Weds.
We welcome a new friend to the AM class: Your child may have already shared the news…a new member of our class, Tyler. He has been visiting for a couple of weeks, and is now officially a new student.
Being Healthy: A friendly reminder that in Pre-K we encourage healthy snack choices, and discourage unhealthy snack choices. We know it’s sometimes hard to stay on track with our food choices, and the children learn from our example. Educating them early about healthy food choices will hopefully lead to a lifestyle of healthy living!
A BIG THANKS: Thanks for the great response to our request for boxes of tissues. Our supply has been nicely replenished.
Looking Ahead: February topics include Self-Care and Dental Health, Valentine’s Day and Friendship. March we will be talking about Dr. Seuss and Clifford, along with Rainbow Fish and Friendship again. We will be having a small Valentine’s party on Friday, the 11th. Sticker labels will be sent home Weds. to help with labeling Valentine’s cards (children are not expected to “write” names). Room parents will be calling with more info.
Thank you to Jennifer and Mrs. Arling for the wonderful Dinosaur crackers. They were enjoyed Wednesday when Mrs. Arling read to the class, and will be enjoyed again on Friday for our Connecticut Loves to Read Day. Thanks again to Mrs. Savinelli for the wonderful Triceratops poster. We appreciate her thinking of us and letting us borrow such wonderful resources.
Enjoy the weekend! See you next week!

A Peek at the Week:
This week was lots of fun with DINOSAURS! The children were very excited about this topic, which got everyone talking. The vocabulary words discussed this week were amazing…including extinct, fossil, paleontologist, dinosaur tracks, and dinosaur bones, herbivore, carnivore, and omnivore. The children enjoyed the various centers that involved dinosaurs, and worked enthusiastically.
A big hit was making a paleontologist’s hat, and then going exploring around the classroom for dinosaur fossils (cut up pictures of dinosaurs made into puzzles). Once they found lots of pieces of dinosaur fossils, they began “reconstructing” the dinosaur. The children got very excited once the dinosaurs were pieced together.
At the Science Center, the amaryllis has begun blooming, and the beetles are popping up like crazy and are now quite active.
PT Group: None due to no school on Weds.
Reminders: If your child is going to be absent, please email Mrs. Maruschock or call the front office. If your child rides the bus, you also need to call the bus driver directly to let her know not to pick your child up.
Help Needed: Unbelievably we have almost gone through our entire supply of tissues! We are asking each parent to send in a box of tissues to help replenish our stock. All of the runny, “sniffly” noses thank you!
Readers still needed: We have two openings still for parent readers on the following dates:
2/9 theme: self-care, and 3/9 theme: colors. Please let us know if interested. Thanks.
Looking Ahead: Because this week was such a huge hit, and because we have so many more fun activities to do involving Dinosaurs, we will be continuing Dinosaurs next week. Other upcoming February topics include Groundhog’s Day, Self-Care and Dental Health, Valentine’s Day and Friendship. March we will be talking about Dr. Seuss and Clifford, along with Rainbow Fish and Friendship again.
Thank you to Mrs. Savinelli for providing the class with LOTS of fun dinosaur materials for the class to use. We appreciate her thinking of us and letting us borrow such wonderful resources.
Thank you from Mrs. Camosci for a very Happy Belated Birthday. The flowers were beautiful, the muffins delicious, and the coffee appreciated, as well as the children’s thoughtful cards.
Enjoy the weekend! See you next week!

Morning Edition January 21, 2005
A Peek at the Week: This week we focused on the signs of winter, and talked about the opposites hot and cold since the weather was perfect for demonstrating cold this week. We continue to work on rapid naming of letters and numbers each day, good preparation for those children going on to Kindergarten next year.
We also continued to work on speech sounds, focusing on the “sh” and “s” sounds. Every adult working in the classroom cues the children to correct their speech using the hand signs shared at the November parent conferences. It is important that these consistently be corrected at home as well to teach your child the correct way to pronounce the words. During transition activities we have been rhyming with the children’s names, spelling their names, saying the first letter of their names, as well as calling out a number “if you are four years old, you can go wash your hands”. These are great quick ways to get the children listening and thinking. Instead of calling your child’s name when you need their attention, try spelling their name, so they get used to hearing the letters in their name.
Centers this week included: paper fun where the students could make their own creations by cutting, gluing, and coloring miscellaneous pieces of paper. The train center was set up on the rainbow rug this week, and this center is always a big hit. We set a timer to remind the children when the time is up, it is time to explore different centers. This is a good way to keep the children from getting “stuck” in one area of the classroom, and being sure everyone gets a turn in the center. At shelf toys the children had many new choices, including “tracing” numbers with their fingers on a circle which follows a track in the shape of the number.
At the Science Center, an Amaryllis bulb was planted, and its growth is being measured and graphed each day. It is currently at 15 inches and soon to bloom its flower. The children have enjoyed using a tape measure to document the growth, and have begun measuring other items in the classroom. Garlic bulbs, and catnip seeds were also planted, and their growth will also be monitored and compared to that of the Amaryllis. Also at the Science Center have been mealworms in a plastic container, feeding on oatmeal and crackers. The dramatic transformation continues: the mealworms continue to turn into the Darkling Beetle. The lid has been off of the container, and the children have enjoyed “digging” in the oatmeal to find the beetles.
PT Group: In PT Group this week the children again used yarn pom-poms and pretended they were snowballs. They pretended to be ice skating, wearing only their socks during this activity. You may have noticed your child’s socks were a bit dirtier than when you sent them to school.
Reminders: This is the last chance for the milk program, which will be starting next week.
NO SCHOOL: Wednesday January 26 for a teacher in-service day.
Enjoy the snowy weekend! See you next week!

Morning and Afternoon Edition January 14, 2005
A Peek at the Week: More winter/snowman fun was the theme this week. Both groups painted winter scenes using white paint on blue or black paper. They also drew winter scenes using white chalk on black paper. These creations are hanging on the bulletin board in our classroom. Some of the afternoon children decided to make a “larger than life” snowman. Mark and Mrs. Dumas drew circles and cut them out on Wednesday, and on Thursday Talya, Colette, Hannah, Stefan, and Jordan joined in on the decorating. They added a hat with a flower on it, buttons, a scarf, arms and legs. The rest of the class plans on finishing it up on Friday. A picture of this creation will be posted on the website ASAP.
At the Science Center, an Amaryllis bulb was planted, and its growth is being measured and graphed each day. Since it had already started growing in the box, it started at 5.5 inches, and is currently at 8 inches. This week a dramatic transformation occurred: the mealworms turned into the Darkling Beetle. The lid has been off of the container, and the children have enjoyed “digging” in the oatmeal to find the beetles, and count how many they have seen…the most reported was six.
Centers: At the block center, the children used a large cardboard box, a table, sheets, and cardboard boxes to build igloos this week. We talked about making “houses out of ice and snow”, and the students carried this out each day at the block center. Photos will be available soon. Shelf toys, coloring with chalk, painting, journals, science, and cutting were available centers this week.
Speech/Language: Bowen-mishou@cromwellct.org
PT Group: In PT Group this week the children used yarn pom-poms and pretended they were snowballs. They had lots of fun doing many cooperative play activities with the “snowballs”…including a pretend snowball fight. Due to the late opening, the AM class did not participate in PT Group this week.
Reminders: Sign-ups for the milk program were sent home this week. If you would like your child to continue or start having milk for snack each day, please send in your choice of milk and money as soon as possible.
NO SCHOOL: Jan 17th in recognition of MLK day, and on January 26 for a teacher in-service day.
Welcome/Farewell: The morning class says “goodbye” to Ryan and the afternoon class says “hello”. He will be missed by the children in the AM class, and has been greeted warmly by the PM class.
Parenting info: Please see the back of this newsletter for information regarding parenting workshops.
Have a great long weekend!

ECS Pre-K Classroom News January 7, 2005
Happy New Year to All of You! This week we learned about “Winter” and the signs of Winter, so it seemed appropriate to have an early dismissal and a day off due to the weather. The classes talked about the process of building a snowman, using a large snowball, a medium snowball, and a small snowball. Depending on each child’s skill level, the child traced three circles on white paper, then cut out the three circles, or if this was beyond a child’s ability, he/she was given already cut out circles to glue on the paper. The children were encouraged to be CREATIVE and make their snowman using a variety of paper cut out shapes and colors. These snowmen are on display in the classroom, and the variety of creations is wonderful! We continued discussing the concepts of size, pointing out other objects, such as cups, of varying sizes. Please continue to work on this with your child, having him/her point to the small one, medium one, and large one as you encounter objects in your everyday environment.
Centers: Tracing a snowman with dry erase markers, and erasing the creation when finished, coloring snowmen, sorting objects into small, medium, and large, putting alphabet “snowflakes” in order from A to Z, blocks, kitchen, and snowman project.
Vocabulary: winter, season, weather, snow, snowball, small, medium, large, put in order.
PT Group
Due to the early dismissal, only the AM class had PT group this week, which was held in the classroom. The children were introduced to the classic childhood game “Musical Chairs”. Everyone did very well following the directions to learn the game, and listening to the music to know when it was time to sit down. Great job everyone!
THANK YOU’s!
Thank you Mrs. Schmidt and Nate for donating the animal crackers for “extra” snacks, and for the wonderful “fine motor” toys donated to the classroom. And a thank you to Mrs. Arling and Jennifer for donating some puzzles to the classroom…all of this will be very useful to both classes.
Looking Ahead
We will continue talking about winter and completing many activities involving this activity for the next two weeks. On Wednesday, Jan 12th, we will be doing some activities involving sorting winter clothing. Please send in your child’s boots, hat, mittens, scarf (if you have one) and of course coat. These will be returned the same day. Thanks for your help with this.
