ECS Pre-K Classroom News May 28, 2004

A Peek at the Week
This week at school we continued talking about community helpers while also continuing our investigations of frogs and butterflies. The children discovered that the smaller pond tadpoles have now grown their front legs as well as back legs. We’re watching for the tails to disappear, and have put a floating log in the container in preparation for their need to climb out of the water. On Friday Mr. Pendl, Jake’s Dad, and also a local firefighter, came in to talk to the children about fire safety and show the students the firefighter gear. The children were all very interested and did a great job participating in the conversations. Centers this week included the sensory table as a pond with water, rocks, and plastic frogs and fish to play with. Making a coloring book about a pond was the Look What I Can Do activity this week, playing with goop, large floor puzzle of tadpoles and frogs, and pretending to be a firefighter with a pretend fire truck, hose, hats, and walkie-talkies.
VOCABULARY WORDS included chrysalis, metamorphosis, changes, first, next, last, front and back legs.

Enjoy the long weekend!

PT Group
This week the children played with kick balls. They practiced kicking to each other, “dribbling” it down a straight line, and finally learned the basics of a kickball game. One child rolled the ball; the other kicked it and ran the bases while the other child ran to get the ball. Then the children switched turns. The other “team” was in the “outfield”, and caught the ball after it was kicked. They did great following directions and really enjoyed this game.

Also, while sandals may be cooler, it’s difficult for the children to play on the playground with sandals, so sneakers are preferred. Thanks for your help with this.

Thanks to Mr. Pendl for reading on Wednesday. The children enjoyed the visit. Another thanks to Mr. Pendl for visiting the morning and afternoon classes on Friday for the firefighter presentation. The children really enjoyed the visit and the chance to see all of the firefighting equipment up close.

A Peek at the Week
This week at school we talked about insects/bugs. The children enjoyed telling lots of stories about encounters with bugs. We read many books about bugs during independent reading, and enjoyed many centers involving bugs. These included: the sensory table filled with finger puppet insects, rocks, grass, etc., the computer game “how many bugs in a box?”, the table game Cooties, an electronic game book called Buzz and Flutters, listened to books on tape, dot painted pictures of insects, and on Friday we’ll finish the week by making our own bug creatures to take home.

Speech and Language
This week we worked on Bear pouring and drinking juice. While doing this we practiced sequencing 3 events. We used the words first, second and third (last). The children continued to review one another’s names. We added doing words to our practice this week. Everyone worked hard!

PT Group
This week the children went out on the playscape and climbed up the tires, across bridges, down the slides, up and down the climbers, through tunnels, across monkey bars, and across the zip line. Everyone did great following the leader and paying attention to directions!
